Corbin 224 Swaging Kit – Complete Bullet Manufacturing Package

Craft Precision .224 Caliber Bullets with the Complete Swaging Kit

The Corbin 224 Swaging Kit is a comprehensive package designed to help you manufacture high-quality, precision .224 caliber bullets, including popular rounds such as 5.56mm, .223, .222, .220 Swift, and .225. This kit includes everything you need to create top-tier jacketed bullets, including dies, presses, and tools to work with spent .22 LR rimfire cases and pure lead from your own supply. Whether you're reloading for hunting, target shooting, or self-defense, this kit has everything required to start making your own .224 bullets with consistency and precision, independent of supply chains.

Key Features:

  • Complete Bullet-Making Kit: The package includes all essential items:
    • CSP-1 S-Press: The precision press that drives the entire swaging process.
    • FJFB-3-S-224-6S Bullet Swaging 3-Die Set: Includes dies for core swaging, core seating, and point forming with a standard 6-S ogive and an open tip.
    • RFJM-22S Rimfire Case Jacket Maker Kit: Converts spent .22 LR cases into jackets suitable for 45 to 60 grain bullets, which can be used for both open-tip and FMJ styles. This is the most economical way to acquire the jackets you need, and can be picked up at your local shooting range!
    • CSL-2 Swage Lube: Reduces friction and ensures smooth die operation.
    • CM-4a .185 4-Cavity Core Mold: Creates uniform lead cores for consistent bullet weight from spent lead. This mold can be used if you have lead lying around that you want to use, and will allow you to use any bleed off lead from the core swaging process once you start processing.
      • You can always purchase lead directly from Corbin in the 0.185" diameter in either rod or precut form.
    • HB-9e Handbook of Swaging: A comprehensive guide to swaging, providing you with expert insights and instructions.
    • Instructions: Step-by-step guidance to make the process as easy as possible.
  • Adjustable Bullet Weight: Create bullets in the 45 to 90 grain range with the appropriate jackets. The rimfire case jackets you make from fired .22 LR cases, using the included RFJM-22S, handle 45 to 60 grains.
  • Rimfire Case Jackets: Utilize fired .22 LR cases for jacket material, reducing costs while providing reliable bullet jackets for informal shooting or hunting.
  • Versatile Bullet Types: This kit allows you to create bullets in various weights, including open-tip and full metal jacket (FMJ) with an additional punch (PUNCH-SM). For a professional finish, you can also add the LT-1-S Lead Tip Finishing Die to form factory-like lead tips.

How It Works:

The term .22 or .224 covers a wide range of centerfire calibers, from .222 to .223, 5.56mm, and beyond, all of which use 0.224-inch bullets. For the Corbin 224 Swaging Kit, fired .22 LR cases are drawn into jackets suitable for 45 to 65 grain bullets, with the heavier weights using lead tips and the lighter ones being open-tip.

This swaging process is rooted in history, as the first centerfire .22 bullet jackets were made in a similar fashion by Harvey Donaldson of the “Donaldson Wasp” fame. The kit allows you to recreate these bullet jackets using your own spent .22 LR cases.

Once you’ve mastered the process for making .224 bullets, you can apply the same techniques to any other caliber, from .104 to 20mm, by adding other die sets in the future.

Steps for Making .224 Caliber Bullets:

  1. Prepare the Jackets: Clean and anneal the spent .22 LR cases, then push them through the RFJM-22S Jacket Maker Kit to straighten out the rim base and form your jackets.
  2. Create the Cores: If you are using the CM-4a Core Mold to create lead cores, melt your lead into the sprue cutter holes, wait for the lead to cool then cut the sprues.
  3. Seat the Cores: Afterward, seat the cores into the jackets with the CS-1-S Core Seating Die.
  4. Shape the Nose: Use the PF-1-S Point Form Die to form the 6-S ogive shape and finalize the bullet nose.

Additional Products to Enhance Your Setup:

  • LR-10 Lead Rod: Use lead rod for faster bullet-making without melting scrap lead.
  • PCS-1 Core Cutter: For quick cutting of lead rod into the correct size for cores.
  • LT-1-S Lead Tip Finishing Die: For a smooth, professional lead tip finish on your bullets.
  • Jacket Reducing Dies: To work with larger jackets or custom jacket-making applications.

Benefits

  • Cost-Effective: Utilize scrap materials to produce high-quality bullets.
  • Quality Assurance: Manufactured by Corbin, a leader in bullet swaging technology.

You will need spent .22 LR cases for the jacket material, lead for the core with a way to melt the lead in order to pour it into the provided mold. The kit includes everything you need except for the lead and spent .22 LR cases.

Yes, you can use commercial drawn jackets available from Corbin or other suppliers. If using commercial jackets, a different core seating punch may be needed to match the internal diameter of the jacket.

Open-tip bullets have a hollow point at the tip, designed for better expansion upon impact. FMJ (Full Metal Jacket) bullets are fully encased in metal, designed for penetration and accuracy. The kit allows you to create both types by adjusting your bullet assembly process, but you will need to purchase an additional punch to create the FMJ style.

The time it takes to make bullets depends on the number of bullets you're making and your familiarity with the process. On average, it takes about 5 minutes per bullet once the setup is complete, but this may vary.

While the Corbin 224 Swaging Kit is incredibly precise, it may require some practice and learning. If you're new to bullet swaging, the HB-9e Handbook of Swaging included in the kit as a downloadable resource is an excellent way to guide you through the process.
